12' vs. 14' Tables

Spread the love

Hi All,
I just came back from an interesting trip to LV. We stayed on the strip at one of the "Empire" places. I have been practicing at home with my throwing station and 1/2 table set for a 12′ table for 3 weeks prior to the trip. I have been getting better at home with the 12′ table but not what I think I want to see. We arrived Thursday and I was too tired to play. Friday morning I got up and after breakfast I went to an open $10 table. I started shooting. My shot looked OK but I was not seeing the dice hit and die. I made 6 or 7 throws and that was it. I colored up went to another table at the same place. I was only able to manage a 6 or 7 maybe an 8 and that was it. So, I left and played a very successful game of Pai Gow Poker. After dinner I decided to walk over to the Casino connected to the first place. The 2nd Casino has 14′ tables. The first two times I had the dice I was making changes to accommodate for the 14′ distance. Starting with the third time I got the dice, I started throwing very nice and very consistently. I was in the high teens to low 20’s each time I threw. I played until 2:30am Saturday morning. I made some good money on the 14′ table. Saturday morning, I went back to the tables at the place we were staying and again I did not get over 6 or 7 throws each time I had the dice.

My experience at home, at the Casinos and Smart Craps are all telling me that I shoot better at a 14′ table than at a 12′ table. Based on everything GTC teaches at the classes, this is counter intuitive to the way the GTC shot works. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Chevy

Some people are unable to get the proper rotation and or height, volictey on the dice at 12 foot tables and need the extra length to make it happen, stick left or right two on a 12 footer is the same as stick one on a 14.

I think that is true. My son practices with me on a 12ft table. he has a great deal of experience on that 12ft table. He does better from R2(he is left handed) than from R1. It does seem to be a function of distance. His shot requires that extra distance to work properly.

Most of the tables in my neck of the woods are 14 foot, so I practice at that distance. When I would play on a 12 foot at SL1 I find that I hit too close to the wall. So even on a 12 foot, I am more comfortable shooting at a 14 foot distance (SL2).

It is surprising to me how much closer the back wall looks from SL1 instead of SL2.

Have talked to Mr. Finesse about this and he has posted before–adjust the length of you back swing. If you do better at a 14 foot table and the only position open at a 12 foot table is SF1/SR1, shorten your back swing. This will take some of the energy off of your throw. And Vice Versa—if you go from a 12 foot table to a 14 foot table, lengthen your back swing a couple of inches—it doesn’t take much.

It is correct that if you go from a 14 footer to a shorter 12 footer and use the exact same throw, you will land too close to the back wall.

This is as I understand it. If someone has some other ideas please do post them for discussion.

Hi All,

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I have a much better idea of what to try to fix this issue. Any other ideas or comments are very welcome.
