Craps

Practice table and shooting station

Spread the love

I Think I’m still the new kid on the block- so stupid question number one. I’m a dedicated DIY and in looking at the photos of the practice table and shooting station and after some study and pondering I assume the set up of the shooting station is perpendicular to the long axis of the practice table such that one can grip the padded board and shoot across an empty space into the mouth of the practice table.??? I’m also a skinflint of the first water so feel bound to try and make this set up for myself. I’m assuming the practice table surface is approx. 3 feet wide and a bit longer??
Thanks for any help. I really appreciate the site and am hoping to save to take a class. I’m starting to play craps again after about a 50 year layoff. A lot more fun than playing the slots. A lot to learn.

Well, there are a few tight wads on the board so don’t feel like the Loan Stranger. If you buy the pyramid rubber from most places it is sold in 4′ lengths. Make your back wall 4′ and the sides what ever length you want, but, keep in mind that the shorter your sides are the more your going to chase errant dice on the floor.

I have an old Library table that was unused in the basement. My practice rig, although dust covered (can’t keep it clean the wind always blows here), was made by laying two 4X8 sheet of 5/8" ply on top of it. The sheets were screwed together and then screwed to the table. I then made a back wall 11" high to accommodate the height of the pyramid sheet and the sides taper down to 8" four feet from the back wall.

You can make it as bouncy or hard as you like but remember a bouncy surface makes you learn to control the dice better. The GTC station I remember as very bouncy, if you can control them on one of those you should be ok almost anywhere.

Placement of the Throwing station is exactly as you describe, Padded rest parallel to the direction your throwing and set at a distance that equals the SL/R length you want to play from. I have my throwing area set for a 12′ table which is at about 7.5′.

Don’t worry about wanting to make it yourself.

For your info, our table set is 28" X 28" square. You really don’t need to make it any bigger unless you want to

Good luck!

I made my own receiving station and it worked great–I not have a craps table. The directions for making it I got from Sharpshooters book. Like StephenC I used a small piece of 5/8 inch ply wood. You can get the pyramids on line from The Gambler’s General Store in Vegas. The 28 inch by 28 inch size that Dom recommended will work fine for the size. As to the back where the pyramids will be glued and the sides, you can use some of scrap from the 5/8 inch plywood. Then go to Home Depot or some such place and get the folding table legs. As to the felt get a good quality felt from a fabric store or a pool table / billiard supply store. The directions in Sharpshooters book will be of great help. You can probably get the wood from the scrap pile at a construction site.

You can make the throwing station in the same manner.

By the way I hope you can take the class soon as it is a lot of fun, entertaining and you will learn an incredible about of knowledge that you never knew existed. Keep us posted as to how you are doing.

Good luck. Hope to see you in the casino soon.

To everyone (Finisher;Stephan C.;Dominator; Dr. Crapology) who offered tips on building a practice table/shooting station – Many Thanks!!! I made a temporary set up in my shop and its probably my imagination, but I seem to be shooting better just working on the hardway set and grip and aiming.

Again Many Thanks, and Good Luck

In descriptions of tables and half tables I see references to "regulation height". What is regulation height for craps tables ??? I seem to remember they vary in length quite a bit.
Thanks for your help.

There is no real "Regulation" for the height of tables. If you set yours at 28" from the floor to the table surface that should cover you for 99% of all tables.
