Another Hotel Goes Resort-Fee Optional: Following a no-brainer trend started by JW Marriott and Treasure Island, Venetian and Palazzo have now gone "resort-fee optional," while increasing the nightly charge, for those who choose to accept it, to $25. In addition to the standard menu of Internet access, local/800 calls, fitness-center access, a daily newspaper, and drink coupons, it now also covers printing of your boarding pass. A call to room reservations at Palazzo revealed that the property increased the fee for daily Internet access to $19.95 (up from $14.95) when the resort-fee-optional policy was introduced; fitness-center access, the other usual "big-ticket" item when it comes to these charges, remains at $15.99.

This contrasts with the JW Marriott in Summerlin, who informed us that "everyone opts out" of their resort fee, which has always been optional, hence the very friendly reservationist had to look up what it covers. In so doing, he discovered, much to his surprise and that of his co-workers, that the fee was recently reduced from $25 to $20 per night, while more amenities are now covered than the last time we checked (which was only a couple of months ago). Whereas at Venetian/Palazzo where, if you’re going to get online, the resort fee probably still makes sense, at the JW Marriott daily Internet access is just $9.95 when purchased à la carte (one of the lowest daily charges for this amenity in Las Vegas). Spa and fitness-center access is $20, however, even with purchase of a treatment, so for you treadmill junkies out there (who presumably work up an appetite), this resort fee might make sense, being that it also includes 2 bottles of water daily, a free appetizer or desert with entrée purchase at the Irish Pub, a free appetizer at TPC cafe (no other purchase necessary), and free breakfast for kids aged 12-and-under with purchase of an adult breakfast.
