What are the details on Harrah’s & Flamingo charging resort fees (after promoting "no resort fees" for a long time)? If you have a comped room offer will this now be an additional charge?
A:
On February 21 the story first broke that Caesars Entertainment was reversing its previously very vocal no-resort-fees policy and would be introducing mandatory charges at all of its Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe properties as of March 1, 2013. (To date, the company has not extended the policy to the other U.S. markets in which it operates, including Reno and Laughlin.) The official word was that, "Based on the current industry standards in the market and evaluation of the services our guests choose and use, a comprehensive package of bundled services and amenities proves to be the best and most meaningful value to our guests. This is in response to the increasing demand from our guests to provide a package price instead of the inconvenience of separate fees. We continue to do all we can to provide our guests with the best value, best products and best experiences in Las Vegas."
The nightly charge, imposed at check-in, ranges from $10-$25, depending on the property, and covers Wi-Fi, local calls, and fitness-center access. And to answer your question yes, we called a few individual properties and were consistently informed that this will apply to all stays booked after March 1, including comped rooms, regardless of the type of accommodation (i.e., even if you reserve or upgrade to the highest of high-end suites, you will still have to pay the resort fee). The only exemptions are for Platinum, Diamond, or 7 Stars members of Total Rewards, for whom the fee will automatically be waived.
That’s the official policy. However, we’ve known of instances of other properties that charge resort fees waiving them on occasions, and for tips on when such circumstances might arise and how best to go about investigating the possibility of avoiding the charge, we’ll refer you to a recent post on this very subject in LVA’s Frugal Vegas blog, penned by the "Queen of Comps" herself, Jean Scott.
If any QoD readers have already had any relevant personal experience that they’d care to share, whether with a CET property or any other Las Vegas hotel that charges a resort fee (click for a comprehensive list, including how much and what amenities are included http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/showtable.cfm?id=33 ), please feel free to drop us a line and we’ll post any useful feedback as an "Update" to this answer.
