Lone Wolf Practice versus Team Play at Tables

Spread the love

This is a topic that I find myself thinking about when developing a plan to go to a casino. My questions stem from observations about myself from 2 vantage points.
My practice at home.
My results in the casino.

I am a lone wolf when it comes to practice. I imagine most of us are. At home, I set, shoot, and retrieve over and over again. To retrieve, I must move my feet, pick up the stick laying in the middle, and retrieve the dice. Then get into the set position again. There is no way to avoid this and just stay in the set position when I am alone. I also throw a chip on the numbers made, most times, so I get a feel for what I am throwing. It is hard to develop the rhythm that I think is so important to a good throw. In essence, each throw is an independent throw, there is no correlation to the previous throws. I often tell people that I am a lousy practice shooter. And I am. I feel I am a much better shooter at the actual table.

At the table, it is more of a team concept. The dealers are part of my team. That is why I work at developing a team to work with in AC. They move the dice, do the retrieval, and clear the payouts and bets to help set up my next throw while I remain in the same spot. Quiet and focused. It is much easier to get in a zone at the actual game table. And I find I can get into a great rhythm much easier in actual play. When I shoot, the only members of my team are the dealers. Any persons that I am with fade into the background as they themselves are only distractions when I am shooting.

This is why tipping is so important. It creates the Team Concept that is so important to shooting. It is also why I am very comfortable going to AC alone as opposed to a bigger group. My best throws have been when I am alone, totally focused, and usually early AM when the tables are not busy. Does anyone else find it this way? Are there any ideas out there to make the game more group shooter friendly for me?

Of course, at the casino there are a number of distractions and variables that cannot be controlled. Most of these are of the "human" variety. The last minute bettor, the impatient buy in, the landing zone ploppy, etc.

When I shoot, and I get in a good groove, I often find myself replicating the same time between shots that I do in practice. Since the table is quicker that I am at home, most times if I make a collection I take the time to organize my rack before throwing again. Sometimes the dice are sitting there waiting for me to throw and I am putting chips in order. If this happens, I tell myself not to rush. They will wait for me. I am the captain of the ship when I am throwing and nothing can happen until I release the dice. Other times I have to speed up the stickman to give me the dice.

In any event, the live table is a dynamic situation- conditions can change rapidly- and you have to learn to navigate those hurdles to get into a good rhythm.
Any other thoughts on Practice versus Live Play and how to meld the two together to make a stronger shooter?

GameDay You hit the nail on the head to say.

I practice all the time by myself. Got use to it after 3 or more years. I bet all different ways trying to find one that I like or should say one that will help me from going broke. It seems that the dealers make more money then I do at the end of each session.
Only good thing is that the dice vary seldom do go off the table. I hope it is because I am getting better and not that I hate looking for them. 😀
I never count my rolls in a casino so can not say how much better they are then practice.
At times in the casino I feel that when setting the dice that I draw attention because I set them fast . It may just be me over thinking .I also find that the hole feeling at the table changes some times. Since I am a quiet person and I do not high fly and all that stuff things do change even if I don’t want them too.

Also at times I look at the prop area and on my side it is clear and the other side is full of bets.I try not to notice how other people bet for it is their money and that is up to them.It seems that the longer the roll the bets get crazy.

Once a year I have a Vegas night were I don’t even get to roll am the stick man.

So I know how you feel.I was talking to DannyP on this site about coming over but have not seen him post lately. It has gotten warmer so have more time to practice.
When I am in the casino and make come bets some of the dealers have said that I am pretty good at throwing the odds on the bet.I have even made it land right on a couple times. I find that at times in the casino I put my bets out to fast which can become a problem. At times it does make it harder for a new dealer but I know how they do it so I just wait and see if they get it right. Also that lets me know how good the dealer is.
Good Rolling. 😀 😀

I believe 90 % of our students are Lone Wolf’s when it comes to practice. The lucky players are those who are husband and wife teams, what an advantage they have, someone to practice with and one who knows what to look for.

The Lone Wolf does have a few things going for them, beacuse we have to retrive the dice we must keep practicing getting set up and this helps us in the casino.

Game,

Practice with some other GTC folks that live near you as well as Lone Wolf Practice. Meet and set up maybe a once a month or every other month schedule to get together and throw, including a simulated session. I know Jumbotron Ron lives in your neck of the woods, and others in the NY, NJ, PA area are fairly close. GTC is a great place where everyone has that common interest and can help each other so you shouldn’t have a problem finding someone to get some practice sessions going.

The Meet and Greet at the Atlantic City class is a great place to meet others on the East Coast, which is not too far away from you. That’s an option too, if you have the time and desire.

Kind regards,

Practice is usually done solo. I know that our West Coast Guys, Dice Pilot, Section8, Raf, Tommy2Names, (hope I am not forgetting anyone) practiced a lot together and it really showed in their development. They moved from student to instructor faster than anyone has! They made up competitions between themselves to keep it interesting.

So as a lone wolf, change what you do when you practice. Come up with a competition with yourself. I do a buy in and try to double the buy in. Just try to keep it interesting

I als practce alone. I view the time I spend retrieving the dice as the time the stick and dealers spend getting the dice back to me. I take this as a good time to practice getting refocused for the next throw.

I pay only my bets so that I provably deliver the dice back to me faster then the dealers do on a full table . I have chips set out for a full table tho. I have gotten fast at putting down the numbers on a sheet of paper but never keep track of time .
I also think that being a lone wolf at the tables has a advantage as well . In so cases the dealers relax a little and talk to each other more. You can find out about their opinions about lots of things just listen.
They really do hate it when a guy comes up and starts yelling come on 7 out. They do notice the shoes you wear . I have heard more then one story about shoes from more then 3 dealers at 2 different casinos about 2 different people . They both know me and one I heard the story before I meet him.
I am sure that after I leave they talk about me but what I don’t know cant hurt me . I know that there are some that just hate me for their own reason. But I do think that there are more that like my play. 😀 Since I do tip. I have been at table when seen the dealers have argument about their tips and betting. Which at a full table you never see. Some times I am there but not there if you know what I mean. I think I have a better porker face at craps then I do when I play porker. 😀
Hope one of these days I can get some one to keep track of my rolls . Since I never do . I think that would just draw more heat.
I prefer to play under the radar .
Good Rolling. 😀 😀

I am hoping that after our open house in AC and at all our seminars, the lone wolf practice sessions will not keep going. I am hoping for friends to meet.

Look for another announcement that might be coming to our Vegas Seminar in June!

PS keep them wanting more 😀
