i was again talked into the hunting shack for our 9 day gun season. i have been huning from my home for
the past 20 years, partly because i wanted to and partly because the shack where everyone was staying
look pretty full.
now son and nephew bought the shack and refinished it, so i was told i need to stay there. well
ok what has to be done has to be done…. but the other reason is that i am not a drinker, and
have not been for 30 years…. i know how, i did that my first 30 years, but enough was enough.
The cost for the stay is $120 per guy, that buys 35 -30 packs of beer, some whiskey, 2 pounds of
hamberger, pork loin, some eggs, butter, (one 12 pack of diet coke for me) as well as some
frozen bread dough. They needed to have some money left in case they ran out of beer.
Well first night was interesting… small start on the beer, one bottle of whiskey gone and to
bed. Les snores so loud you would have to be dead not to hear it. then jamie falls off to sleep and sleep
walks all over the cabin talking Klingon or something….now and then others perk up, when they all
get going it is not bad just sounds like a train going by and i can sleep through that. 6 guys and all
have their alarms set wrong they go off all night… i get up at four, go out in the kitchen and
lay down there is it quiet….
1 day done and 8 to go…. beer and whiskey are not going to last…. to night i am heading
down the road 4 miles there is a casino…. i think i can sit on one of the chairs and pretend to
play slots and get a good night sleep.
Its not all that bad i can go into me deer stand turn on the gas heater and take a knap. Hope
i wake up in time to listen to the Packers on my radio and make a couple of burgers for
dinner.
Life is rough as a deer hunter… but you have to do what is needed to bring fresh meat for
the family. Oh ya we have 6 hanging in the cooler already, now we have to cut them all up
and that takes even more beer and whiskey…… and diet coke

Tomorow, Thanksgiving Day, I will sit a couple of hours in a deer stand with my 9 year old grand son watching the deer. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Thanks for posting. It made my day.

i am not sure if this is a good sign or bad sign but we had 3 30 packs of beer left, all the whiskey is
gone, 2 chairs were broke, and we had 7 loaves of home made bread left and all the ham.
On would have to draw your own conclusions regarding the hunt, maybe as the beer goes so
does the bread and ham. Or the corelation between beer and whiskwy consumption and its
affect on hunting time.
at any rate since i dont drink i hunted, steve and i saw 93 deer and 24 bucks in the season, we did
not shoot any as none met our minimum size requirement. Basically we have two heated stands
on the east side of the property and we dont ever walk in the balance during the season. we have
been doing this for 2 years and 3 deer and 24 bucks is pretty good for 60 acres. The bean field was
not as productive as i hoped, but maybe tweek that a tad next year.
