I enjoy talking about religious beliefs and politics, uncomfortable areas for most. But I have a lot of experience doing it respectfully, openly, and with some humor. Why do it? Because it is so helpful to understand people’s perspectives, to get to know them.
I like to tell this to my Baptist friends: What is the difference between a Baptist and a Catholic? Answer: Catholics say hello to each other in a liquor store.
When I find out someone is or was in the Air Force, like my back surgeon, I say, “Well, that’s kind of like being in the military!” And no USAF veterans have ever disagreed but are amused. However, after that amazing feat of the Minesota B-2’s dropping bunker buster bombs on the Iran nuclear weapon facilities – wow, that was mind shattering – I reevaluated my joke. Those horrifically large bombs were dropped so accurately that they each hit a target opening the size of a refrigerator door! That was unheard of precision and coordination. God Speed to the Air Force! Made me proud.
