Most are too young to have been around to have seen it, but I clearly remember the fall of Saigon, 30 April 1975. I was Active Duty Navy at the time. Evening news showed a U.S. helicopter being swarmed by desperate Vietnamese (U.S. Allies) swarming to get onto the last helicopter, leaving from the roof of the U.S. Embassy – an ignominious spectacle. Just a year before, 27 Jan 1973, North Vietnam signed a peace treaty with us and South Vietnam, ending the war in victory, even succeeding in the return of all of our POWs.
All this was accomplished by a resolute President Nixon, whose campaign promise was “Peace with Honor”. Most remember Nixon for Watergate. Not me. I remember him for successfully and victoriously ending the Vietnam War, opening relations with China (which cut the Soviet Union off at the knees, paving the way for President Reagan to end the Cold War “without a shot fired”). And, I remember President Nixon having the largest hands of any man I ever met, a quick wit, and a great conversationalist.
While I opposed and demonstrated against the Vietnam War, brought to us by President Johnson, I nevertheless was glad to join the military one month after I turned 18, back when that was old enough to drink, smoke, and risk your life for your country. I was soon followed by my 2 younger brothers. Then, 30 years later, by my 5 sons who joined in response to 9/11.
Less than a year after President Nixon’s resignation, the strongly held Democrat Congress ended all support and military aid to South Vietnam, who had been successfully keeping North Vietnam out – without any loss of American lives. When we abruptly cut off South Vietnam, their military crumbled. President Ford did nothing, but neither did I see anything he could do, lawfully. Gerald Ford was a decent and honest man, who never considered going outside the bounds of the Constitution. (He also had a very pretty and cordial daughter my age, Susan.)
Now, 46 years later, we have a painfully incompetent President Biden glibbly announcing to the world he was pulling out all 3,000 U.S. military personnel from Afghanistan, not even leaving behind enough to protect the Embassy. Breathtaking idiocy. The Taliban swept across the country, taking full control. When Kabul fell, Biden was asked how this was any different from the fall of Saigon. His response?
President Biden: “There’s going to be no circumstance where you see people being lifted off the roof of a embassy in the—of the United States from Afghanistan. It is not at all comparable.” The very next day – the very next day – videos emerged showing helicopters having to leave from the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Kabul.
Then, apparently deciding to leave no stone of stupidity unturned, President Biden gave a speech, claiming that this unmitigated disaster would have happened no matter when and no matter how it was done. All that proves is that this guy, and his administration, have no idea what they are doing. They have a glaring failure, saying, “Well, there’s nothing for us to learn from that fiasco! Whoo boy, that’s messed up! Let’s move on to see what else we can ruin.”
“But we had to leave Afghanistan!” – you might say. No.
Not any American soldier’s life had been lost in Afghanistan in almost 2 years. Why? Because the front line fighting had already been transitioned to the Afghan forces. Our role was artillery and air support. When Biden fled from Afghanistan, the artillery and air support left, too. That is why Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. We are still in Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Cuba. We should still be in Afghanistan, which kept the entire region within our reach.
But there is no stopping willful stupidity. Don’t worry. There is much more to come. You think Obama gave Isis the “beheading and burning alive” run of Iraq? You ain’t seen nothing, yet. Give it a year and see what comes our way.
Next up, Taiwan and open borders. I’m sorry, the border is already open, with free bus transportation to your front yard. I wonder what surprises this administration will have for us in the economy?

First I am not to young Preacher to remember 1975. Next the issue is not if we should be out of Afghanistan for crying out load, but HOW to get out of Afghanistan. Ask the question in any poll, “should we get out of Afghanistan?” and the answer is yes. Where is the follow up question – ‘Do you want Afghanistan to be run by the Taliban?” and the overwhelmingly the answer would be NO.
And please tell me why we couldn’t keep 2500 troops and air support in Afghanistan when we have 35,000 in Germany, 3200 in Spain, 40,000 in Japan, 8500 in England? I could go on, but I won’t.
And please tell me why this administration made sure the troops were out before American citizens? And please tell me how are we going to vet the Afghans that theoretically helped us, (there are news articles where these interpreters who helped us for years, then helped plant bombs that killed US troops), when we can’t vet how is coming in at the border?
But hey, we don’t have midnight tweets anymore
Lastly, this is not the country I grew up in and I worry about what this country is going to be like for my grandchildren. When I was in Pakistan on business about 18 years ago I had a driver who took me around. I was amazed at the things I saw as we drove to the building I was working at….when I said something he said to me something I will never forget, he said to me, “and you think you live in a FREE country.”
