I know this may sound like an old man with too much time on his Hand. Get over it. Like many of you out there, I am trying to shake off some of my bad moods and negativity and make the most out of the situation I find myself in so, bare with me.
In using the three finger grip, I often focus on my fingers and the relationship that they have with the dice. If my arm is fully extended and the dice are in my hand below my nose. I am ready for my back swing, follow through and delivery. At this point, I have picked up my dice and solidified my grip firmly on the dice. I begin to evenly lighten the pressure I have on the dice. If I am using the pads or the tips of my fingers and truly focus on each finger I can ascertain the weight of the dice and how it is distributed with each finger. Now, going one step further, I can feel the overall balance and how the weight is distributed in my hand. Are the dice feeling evenly weighted across the three fingers and balanced evenly?
Take the time to really feel this. So much of what we do is contained in the grip. The moment focus is lost, we can be out of touch with what our hand is doing. Get a little nervous, distracted by something the boxman says and our hand no longer notices how the fingers are balancing the dice. Once I feel good about the grip and the balance contained I the try to lock in my fingers for the entire backswing and follow through. The toughest part is just making sure the fingers don’t move as the dice escape the grip.
So much of what we do is based on nuance at this point. How well are you connected with what your body is doing and what your mind is aware of? As you deepen this knowledge this simple act of tossing the dice, can also be a great tool for deepening your own self awareness.
I realize everybody is having a rough time out there and my heart goes out to all my fellow dice lovers. I’m tired of being down. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for Vegas. I’m rooting for all of us. Stay healthy and keep practicing. I hope to see as many of you in Vegas as possible. I am ready to have some fun. All the best, from smoky California

DoughBoy,
You can quit being so generous with that California smoke ! I can barely see the mountains here in Arizona. Seriously I hope it has not caused any impact to you, other than the nasty smoke. So sad for those that loose homes to fire. Thank you for the good advice of the grip. Connecting to what your body is doing so important, I think the practice helps it become just secondary the muscle memory. The important thing I think is to have a yearly checkup and make sure no bad habits are sneaking in. October will be here soon! If any of you members are thinking of a refresher course I don’t think you could find a better deal for a 2 day class !
