Craps

In need of instruction

Spread the love

Hi all,

I attended the Memphis seminar this spring. When I left I was throwing well. However my work schedule hasn’t allowed me ample practice time. I’m trying to get back into a practice routine. But, I find that I’m opening my thumb from my grip on release, instead of the dice releasing through centrifugal force. I’m not spreading my fingers, they are staying tight together and fingertips are even, just opening my thumb from the grip. Is there an exercise I can use to help this. If I think about it, I won’t open my grip. But the idea i believe, is to not think about everything while we are throwing… I have a trip to Vegas on July 11th for a few days. Also, I will be attending the Vegas seminar for a refresher in August as well as a tuneup…. thanks in advance. Tug

Go to the Vegas seminar take the two hour tuneup they’re designed specifically to work on one little thing like this a written explanation is nothing in comparison to the physical demonstration it’s so worth the money it’s the only way to go if you want to achieve success.

Brothelman,

Already planning on the seminar and touch up. But wrong practice creates stronger bad habits to overcome. Looking to tweak my throw before my July trip.

Rose and Doc catch themselves letting their thumbs not stay in position as you outline. What we do is something that you mentioned–really think about keeping your thumb in position right behind your middle finger as the dice rotate off your front fingers. When this happens we think about it on every throw that we make in practice—after all it is practice where you work on fundamentals. Over time as you think less about it the correct position of the thumb will work it’s way back into your throw.

We like to warm up with taking care to really think about what we are doing in each part of the throw from setting the dice to having the dice gently roll off our fintger tips.

BTW–this won’t be the only thing that will creep back into your throw. Why do you think the golf pros on the PGA tour have swing coaches and the best 300 hitters in baseball have swing coaches to look for problems develop. We are no different.

We will look forward to seeing at the seminar in August and working with your during a tune up. Taking a tune up will give you a few ideas of what to work on during the Refresher course.

Hope that helps.

See you soon.

Hi Tug,

I found myself doing this too (along with a few other problems) about a month after the class. I ended up buying an inexpensive video camera and watched my practice sessions. You would be surprised how much you catch yourself doing.
I know this may sound like a generic answer , but I also went back to the basics during my practice sessions (using the gripper. reading my class notes, and trying to remember key points each instructor gave us at each station). I know sometimes its hard to get in practice sessions at home, but for me it really was the key.
Hope you get it figured out before your trip. Good luck and keep posting!

Gridmaker,

Thanks for the input.. I do have a video camera and thought about using it in practice and I may. Also noticed that thinking about the grip/release on each throw, that I open my hand less often as Doc and Rose suggests.

Use the video camera. We often use our Ipad slo pro function to film each other from time to time. It really seems to help us. BTW–you can have your wife or girl friend (but not both at the same time 🙄 ) be your video operator.

Doc,

I will use the camera. I am a widower, so no wife or girlfriend but I could use a tripod. I also have a 2nd camera I could use to video the landing and reaction of the dice, will just need another tripod. Thanks, Tug

OK I’m gonna take a stab in the dark I believe your grip is too tight this is why you’re having to open your thumb because the Dice will not rotate off with centrifugal force loosen your grip to the point that they fall out.

Tug,

Will you let us know what you see in your video of your dice
landing and their reaction after hitting the wall?
Thanks in advance.

What a chance to meet you today and then watching you throw so on top of the thumb being too tight like I said it’s also just not centered that’s it your rotations look great your arm swing had a nice pure clean smooth speed to it it was consistent those two little fixes in your thumb will make the Dice land consistently in the same area he got a bright future ahead of you shooting dice in my personal opinion.! 🙂 And then what are the chances that we both go to the same place for lunch that was hilarious I love rock pizza you know you could always just grab a slice at that outside walk up window to Hope your knock them dead
